Free agent-to-be CB Nnamdi Asomugha is worth how much?
Free Agent Nnamdi Asomugha Could Fetch Nearly $20 Million Per Year?
According to NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora, if and when the NFL lockout ends and free agency begins, Asomugha could be pocketing a contract worth upwards of $19 million per year.
That is simply incredible. That type of per-year-average is generally reserved for the NFL’s best quarterbacks, a premium position. While cornerback is certainly a critical aspect of a team’s defense, it’s not as important as quarterback which is why I’m continually surprise when people talk about the money that will be necessary to sign Asomugha.
While he wants to play for a winner, Asomugha also likely realizes it would be hard to turn down that much money from a team. Lucky for him, the new CBA could include language that require teams to spend a minimum of the cap (perhaps even higher than the previous salary floor), which means some low-spending teams, like the Buccaneers as La Canfora suggests, could be in a position where they need to spend money.
Remember, the Bucs put a pretty massive deal [on the] table for Haynesworth a few years back as well. I could see them out-bidding others for Nnamdi (but that average per year is gonna be more like $19M than $16M). That would not surprise me.
That would be a pretty good deal for the Bucs because, despite having one of the lowest reported payrolls, they still won 10 games.
