The NFL lockout has eliminated free agency but there are still talks about the various free-agents-to-be including Oakland Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha, who is expected to be the most expensive player in free agency.
Nnamdi Asomugha To Green Bay Packers Makes ‘Zero Sense’
Last week, Peter King of SI.com wrote that these five teams could have an interest in Asomugha: Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Detroit Lions and New York Jets. And this week King writes that one team doesn't make sense: Green Bay Packers.
Just not a smart fit. Super Bowl winners have to pay too many people already on the team, nevermind an $18-million-a-year (approximately) import. And with Charles Woodson recovering well from his Super Bowl broken collarbone and rising star Tramon Williams and free-agent revelation Sam Shields, young and already accomplished, Asomugha to Green Bay makes zero sense.
I’m not sure where some of these rumors come from but I agree with King. The Packers are already an elite team having won the 2011 Super Bowl and the prospects of adding a player who could command one of the richest contracts in the league doesn’t make a lot of sense.
Someone out there will pay Asomugha whenever free agency hits -- it’s just not expected to be the Packers.
