The "big announcement" from MLS turns out to be one many expected: Red Bull Arena will host the MLS All-Star game in July. MLS has also scheduled a press-conference with Commissioner Don Garber and players Thierry Henry and Landon Donovan. Presumably, they'll discuss the game as well as potentially reveal who the MLS All-Stars will play. There's also speculation that a new TV deal could be announced.
Red Bull Arena Will Host 2011 MLS All-Star Game
The match will mark the first time the All-Star Game has been played in the New York area since 1997. Giants Stadium, where the New York MLS team played until last year, hosted the first two all-star games.
This will be the first time New York has hosted the game under the current format where the MLS All-Stars take on a touring foreign club. In past years, the All-Star Game has featured such notable opponents as Chelsea, Manchester United and Everton. Many have speculated that this year's game could be played against Barcelona.
“The combination of one of the most spectacular stadiums of its size in the world with the passionate soccer supporters in the metropolitan New York area will provide a terrific showcase for our All-Star Game,” Garber said on the MLS website. “Red Bull Arena will be a tremendous venue for this marquee event and we are pleased to bring the All-Star Game to an area with a rich soccer tradition.”
