Washington Huskies QB Jake Locker 2011 NFL Draft Profile

2011 NFL draft profile by John Berkowitz of SB Nation’s Washington Huskies blog, UW Dawg Pound.

Bio Stats: QB - Jake Locker - University of Washington - 6’3 - 230 - Senior - Ferndale, Washington

On the field: Jake is a classic dual threat quarterback. He has one of the strongest arms in the draft and he is the definition of a mobile QB. He played in a pro style offense the last two years under UW coach Steve Sarkisian which forced him to pass first and run second.

Jake throws best when he is rolling out. His passing from the pocket and footwork needs improvement. He overthrows his receivers to much. He isn’t the type of guy who can step in and start immediately for an NFL team next year but he has one of the highest upsides in the draft.

Jake has one thing that you can’t coach and that is speed. He is a very dangerous player outside of the pocket. If he can put his accuracy problems behind him he could end up being pretty special.

Local story: Football is his passion but Jake was a standout baseball player in high school and was drafted by the California Angels in 2009. Jake projects as a first round type of talent as a pitcher or outfielder. He is currently under contract with the Angels and could possibly play for one their affiliates this season if there is an NFL lockout.

The Angels love his arm, speed, size, and even the way he swings the bat even though he hasn’t played baseball on a regular basis since high school. The Angels hold his rights until August of 2015.

Comparable to which NFL player: The obvious guy to compare him with is former Florida QB Tim Tebow who started three games for the Denver Bronco's last season. He has also been called a bigger, taller, right handed version of Steve Young.
