Dodgers third baseman Casey Blake has been out of action with a horribly inflamed elbow. There was some hope on the Dodgers' part that Blake would get better with rest and wouldn't need surgery, but, about that:
Casey Blake Elbow Injury Requires Surgery
Mattingly: Casey Blake will miss at least four weeks after elbow surgery.
Doctors cut Blake open and flushed him out, which is exactly as disgusting as it sounds. Blake is expected to have his arm in a sling for the next ten days, after which he’ll slowly ease himself back into baseball activities. By the time he’s back to normal throwing and swinging, approximately a month will have passed from the day of his operation. According to the plan, anyway.
For a Dodgers team that was already playing without Rafael Furcal, this is a fairly significant setback. Their infield is currently made up of James Loney, Aaron Miles, Jamey Carroll, and Juan Uribe, and one wonders whether they'll be able to hang in the race. Thank goodness for Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier, I suppose.
