Brandon Beachy Oblique Injury Sends Starter To DL

Friday night, Atlanta Braves starter Brandon Beachy suffered an oblique strain while batting. After he was unable to complete his warmup pitches the next inning, he was removed from the game, and after a reevaluation on Saturday, Mark Bowman informs us that Beachy's going to be out for some time:

As Brandon Beachy strolled through the Braves clubhouse Saturday morning, it was confirmed that he is destined for the disabled list. But the Braves are going to wait at least one more day before announcing who they will promote from Triple-A Gwinnett to take his spot in the rotation.

Fredi Gonzalez referred to the injury as a “classic” oblique strain, which is an injury that can keep a guy out for a number of weeks. Not only does it really really hurt; it takes a while to heal completely, and you have to wait until it heals completely or it’ll just happen again. Oblique injuries have this nasty tendency to nag.

So with Beachy out "at least three weeks and possibly longer," the question now is who'll come up to take his place. The top candidates are prospects Mike Minor and Julio Teheran. Both have made one start with the Braves this season, and down in AAA, Minor has a 1.82 ERA over six starts, while Teheran has a 1.91 ERA over six starts. Kind of hard for the Braves to go wrong here, no matter who they choose. Teheran might be the best pitching prospect in the minors, with Minor not far behind.
