If it wasn't for bad injury luck, the St. Louis Cardinals would have no injury luck at all.
Cardinals’ Lance Berkman And Matt Holliday Both Injured In Wednesday Win
During Wednesday night's 5-1 victory over the Astros, the Cardinals lost two-thirds of their starting outfield ... and this, with one-third of their starting outfield, center fielder Colby Rasmus, already on the bench with an abdominal strain.
Wednesday, it was left fielder Matt Holliday and right fielder Lance Berkman.
Early reports suggest that Berkman’s injury is the more troublesome. From ESPN 101 Radio’s Brian Stull:
Berkman had x-rays, were negative -- no break. But, he is scheduled to see a doctor tomorrow morning, believes his wrist is sprained.
It’s hard to hit with a sprained wrist, but since we don’t know that it’s actually sprained we’ll wait to engage in a great deal of further speculation.
Meanwhile, Holliday was removed in the third inning with a tight left quadriceps, having made a running catch at the warning track in the previous frame. Early indications are that he was feeling better after the game, but again we’ll avoid much further speculation.
We can say that the Cardinals have already been racked by injuries, with Adam Wainwright out all season, starting infielders David Freese and Skip Schumaker on the DL, and Nick Punto joining them Wednesday. Somehow Tony La Russa's held things together, but even he might be overwhelmed by the loss of Berkman and/or Holliday.
