The Cardinals lost two of their best hitters to injuries during Wednesday night’s game against the Astros; both Matt Holliday (tight quad) and Lance Berkman (wrist) had to leave the game, but St. Louis won anyway. They also won Thursday night with both Berkman and Holliday out of the lineup.
Matt Holliday May Return Friday; Lance Berkman Still Day-To-Day
Friday morning, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Holliday, who was reportedly available Thursday to pinch-hit, may return to the lineup Friday as the Cardinals take on the Royals in Kansas City. Berkman, though, may be out for a while:
Berkman wore a brace throughout the day Thursday to keep movement of the wrist to a minimum. He injured the joint when making a diving catch in the fifth inning Wednesday. An immediate X-ray showed the team there wasn’t a fracture in his hand, and the soreness had subsided by the time Berkman saw the doctor Thursday morning, he said. The Cardinals do not expect to put him on the disabled list and are labeling him day-to-day. The right fielder said he’ll try to swing a bat as soon as the wrist feels ready.
With St. Louis visiting Kansas City, Holliday could be slotted in at DH, minimizing the exposure to his quad. Manager Tony LaRussa says he won’t “push” either player to return before they’re ready.
