First, this tweet from Joe Strauss:
Cards’ Schumaker Activated; Reliever Mitchell Boggs Down?
Hearing corresponding move (pitcher) to Schumaker exiting DL something of a surprise.
Surprise? My first thought was Ryan Franklin, but that would have been more than something of a surprise. Though Franklin doesn't make so much money that the accountants would really care a whole lot.
Anyway, here’s Strauss’s next tweet:
Hearing Mitch Boggs optioned to Memphis. Club yet to confirm.
Yeah, that would be something of a surprise. When Franklin lost his closer’s job, Boggs was first in line and converted his first three save opportunities in good order. But then he blew a save, hasn’t had a shot since, and this month he’s given up five runs in only five innings. If nothing else, it’s apparent that he’s lost the confidence of his manager.
Still, Boggs has a perfectly respectable 3.66 ERA, while Franklin’s sitting on 9.20. The problem is that it’s hard to dump Franklin, and every other reliever on the staff actually has an ERA lower than Boggs’ 3.66.
So if this does happen, it won’t be a huge surprise.
Meanwhile, the return of Skip Schumaker begins to get the Cardinals' infield back in shape, which is good for them but bad for a particular Baseball Nation writer who was going to write a really nifty piece pegged to Albert Pujols playing third base again. Not that he's pulling for Schumaker to get hurt again or anything.
