The talented Esmil Rogers has had a rough go of it this season. The Rockies starter has allowed 19 runs in 22.1 innings, with 15 strikeouts and 13 walks. Worse, he developed some lat soreness that didn't go away for a Wednesday throwing session, so now the Rockies have placed him on the disabled list:
Esmil Rogers Lat Injury Lands Rockies Starter On DL
Rogers goes on the disabled list with a strained lat muscle that remained annoyingly sore after Wednesday's side session.
The plan is for the 25-year-old Rogers to make a couple of rehab starts before the team re-evaluates his position. In the meantime, Clayton Mortensen has been called up to take his place and will start against the Giants Saturday night in San Francisco. The 26-year-old righty came to Colorado in an offseason trade with the A’s, and while the sinkerballer has a career 5.84 ERA in the bigs, he’s had better luck in AAA, and he got some attention during spring training for having the club’s best sinker in camp.
Mortensen made two appearances for the Rockies earlier this season, throwing eight scoreless relief innings.
