Yankees captain Derek Jeter is recovering from a mild calf strain, and is in line to return to the Yankees on July 4 following a brief minor league rehab assignment.

Jeter’s feeling close to 100%, so his injury should no longer be a factor once he’s back. As far as his run towards 3,000 hits is concerned - he’s currently stuck at 2,994 - the Yankees will play three in Cleveland, then four at home against Tampa Bay, then eight in Toronto and Tampa. So Jeter has a narrow window of opportunity to come up with number 3,000 at home.

Wednesday’s update: progress!
Jeter took a few sessions in batting practice. He ran the bases with moderate intensity. He fielded a handful of grounders, and made a handful of throws. The running is the most important part, since Jeter hurt his leg and only started running on Monday. He’s getting closer, and it shouldn’t be long before he’s back in the lineup.

The Yankees will be in the second of a three-game interleague series with the Milwaukee Brewers on June 29; after that, they go on a six-game road trip. However, the first three games of that trip are no farther than a subway ride for Yankees fans; they’ll be playing the Mets at Citi Field; after that they head to Cleveland. It would be a fascinating scene if Jeter got his 3,000th career hit in the home of the Yankees’ crosstown rivals.
