Derek Jeter Injury: Yankees Shortstop Works Out, Targets Return Date

New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, who suffered a Grade 1 calf strain on June 13 and went on the disabled list, stalling his quest for 3,000 hits at 2,994, had his first workout since the injury on Tuesday and hopes to return to action soon:

Jeter did some throwing and played long-toss on a field at the Yankees’ training complex in Tampa, then worked out inside and received treatment.

“He’s going in the right direction,” Joe Girardi said.

The Yankees remain hopeful that Jeter will be able to return from the disabled list when he’s eligible on June 29, although Girardi indicated that the Captain would likely need to play a minor-league rehab game or two before coming back.

The Yankees will be in the second of a three-game interleague series with the Milwaukee Brewers on June 29; after that, they go on a six-game road trip. However, the first three games of that trip are no farther than a subway ride for Yankees fans; they’ll be playing the Mets at Citi Field; after that they head to Cleveland. It would be a fascinating scene if Jeter got his 3,000th career hit in the home of the Yankees’ crosstown rivals.
