Derek Jeter Injury: Yankees Shortstop Leaves Game With Calf Injury On Road To 3,000 Hits

In the first inning of Monday night's game between the Cleveland Indians and New York Yankees, Derek Jeter recorded the 2,994th hit of his career. In the bottom of the fifth inning, though, things took a different turn. From MLB.com:

Derek Jeter exits Indians-Yankees game with apparent leg injury in the fifth.

Uh-oh. The injury came on a seemingly innocuous fly out from Jeter against Indians starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco. Jeter ran hard out of the batter's box and pulled up almost right away. He left the game with what is being described as a right-calf injury.

Eduardo Nunez took over at short in the game, and he will likely get the bulk of the playing time should Jeter be out for an extended period, but that sort of talk is a little premature. Entering Monday night's game, Jeter was hitting .259 with a delightfully symmetrical .324 on-base percentage and .324 slugging percentage.
