Derek Jeter Injury: Captain Close To Return To Yankees

The moment we've all been waiting for is fast approaching: Derek Jeter is on the verge of returning from an extremely mild strained calf.

The speculation lately has been that Jeter would return to the Yankees in early July. Now we've got an official schedule. Via the AP, Jeter will join double-A Trenton for a brief minor league rehab assignment on Saturday and Sunday. He will then join the Yankees in time for a series in Cleveland beginning Monday, July 4. Jeter was injured in a game against Cleveland, so it'll be like nothing ever happened.

Jeter’s feeling close to 100%, so his injury should no longer be a factor once he’s back. As far as his run towards 3,000 hits is concerned - he’s currently stuck at 2,994 - the Yankees will play three in Cleveland, then four at home against Tampa Bay, then eight in Toronto and Tampa. So Jeter has a narrow window of opportunity to come up with number 3,000 at home.

As Jeter's fill-in at shortstop, Eduardo Nunez has batted .277 since June 14 with a .716 OPS. When Jeter returns, Nunez will re-occupy his usual spot on the bench.
