David Wright Injury: Mets Third Baseman On Rehab Assignment, May Return By Weekend

New York Mets third baseman David Wright, who has been on the disabled list with a stress fracture in his back since May 16, may be very close to returning to the Mets lineup.

Wright has been on a rehab assignment with Class A St. Lucie; on Monday night he went 3-for-6 with three runs scored. The better news for the Mets is that Wright was only expected to play seven innings in that game, and instead played the full nine.

Mets manager Terry Collins said the Mets are looking toward the weekend as the return date for their third baseman. He also said before Monday’s game that Wright should play a full nine innings on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Most indications now are that Wright will return to the Mets’ lineup on Friday when they travel to Miami to begin a three-game series with the Marlins. The Mets dropped a rainout-makeup game to the Marlins Monday in New York to fall a game under .500, but still hope to make up ground in the wild-card race. They currently trail the leading Braves in that race by 9.5 games.
