Red Sox Announce Hurricane Irene Rescheduling

With Hurricane Irene expected to arrive in the major cities of the northeastern United States over the weekend, people all over are making plans to evacuate, or otherwise change what they had planned for this upcoming weekend.

Major league baseball teams are no exception to this. Late Thursday, the Boston Red Sox announced changes in their weekend series with the Oakland Athletics:

The Red Sox announced today that the game against the Oakland Athletics originally scheduled for Sunday, August 28, at 1:35 p.m., has been moved to Saturday, August 27, at 5:00 p.m., as part of a split doubleheader at Fenway Park. The start time of the Saturday regularly scheduled game has been moved to 12:00 noon.

The team stated in its press release that fans holding tickets for Saturday’s regularly scheduled game should use them for the first game of the doubleheader; people who have tickets for Sunday’s game can use them for the second game on Saturday.

Red Sox president Larry Lucchino said:

This will not only give us the best opportunity to play the scheduled games, but also help to insure that traveling conditions are safer for our fans. We apologize for the inconvenience these changes will cause our fans this weekend, both those coming to the ballpark and those tuning in to the game on radio or television.

More reschedulings for games in New York and Baltimore this weekend could be announced soon. Stay with this StoryStream for further updates.
