Logan Mankins Interested In Long-Term Deal With New England Patriots

After battling with his team in 2010, complaining about his contract and holding out for the first two months of the season, New England Patriots guard Logan Mankins is singing a different tune this year.

“There’s always a chance,” he said of the possibility of putting together a multi-year contract. “I’ve talked to the coaches, to ownership, everyone. We’re all on the same page. We’ll just see what happens.

“[I] have great memories here. I’ve had a lot of fun like everyone here. We’ll see what happens. I understand now more than ever that it’s a business.”

Mankins has the Patriots’ franchise tag this year and will get a salary of $10.1 million unless he and the Pats can agree on a deal. If they were to do so, his salary would count less against the cap.

The Patriots have until September 20 to negotiate an extension with Mankins. If they cannot reach one by that date, they have to wait until after the season.

Mankins also attempted to clarify earlier comments about the Patriots being “liars,” saying he did not mean owner Robert Kraft:

“Me and Mr. Kraft never had a problem. I never said he lied,” Mankins said. “When I said the organization, I never said he did. So let’s get that straight right now. Me and Mr. Kraft never had a problem.

Mankins and Kraft “chatted amiably” this week in camp.
