Patriots owner Robert Kraft recently said he hopes to have Logan Mankins as a “Patriot for life” and he’s come awfully close to that as the two sides have reportedly agreed to terms on a six-year contract.

Logan Mankins’ Contract With Patriots Reportedly Worth $51 Million

That’s $8.5 million per year which makes him the highest paid offensive lineman on a per-year basis. He also received a $20 million signing bonus.

Mankins was due just over $10 million next season with the franchise tag so the Patriots may have come out ahead on the salary cap by doing the deal.

Logan Mankins’ Contract With Patriots Is A Win-Win

SB Nation’s Pats Pulpit is glad to see one of the top guards in the game be rewarded.

I agree, even though we haven’t seen the numbers. The Patriots don’t give out bad contracts very often so I’m assuming it’s a competitive deal that works for both sides.

Logan Mankins, Patriots Agree One Six-Year Contract, According To Report

It’s hard to believe Mankins and the team agreed on a six-year deal after what transpired last season. Mankins held out for the first eight weeks of the season in protest of his contract. He was one of those fifth year players that, in a normal year would have been an unrestricted free agent, but with the uncapped season was actually a restricted free agent.

He was the team’s 2005 first round pick and has yet to secure a long-term contract so this has to be a happy day for him.

Patriots Owner Wants To Keep Logan Mankins A ‘Patriot For Life’

He sat out for half the season in protest of his deal and, after the season ended, they restricted him again through the franchise tag. Mankins was obviously frustrated.

After all that, and the situation last year, it sounds like Mankins could actually stay in New England long-term. He has already signed his franchise tender guaranteeing him over $10 million in 2011 but Patriots owner recently told reporters that he hopes Mankins will soon be a “Patriot for life.”

Logan Mankins Interested In Long-Term Deal With New England Patriots

Mankins has the Patriots’ franchise tag this year and will get a salary of $10.1 million unless he and the Pats can agree on a deal. If they were to do so, his salary would count less against the cap.

The Patriots have until September 20 to negotiate an extension with Mankins. If they cannot reach one by that date, they have to wait until after the season.

Logan Mankins Signs With Patriots; Could Long-Term Deal Be Coming?

Mankins missed a big chunk of last season while holding out, so it’s good news for Patriots fans that he won’t do it again this year. He should make about $10 million, and while Mankins has said that he didn’t want to receive the franchise tag, it isn’t that bad a deal for him. True, he assumes some long-term risk by going year to year, but $10 million is a great salary for a guard.

Time will tell whether these developments will lead to a long-term extension for Mankins. Now that he’s in camp, last year’s holdout is a thing of the past, so it might be possible for Mankins and the Patriots to reach some sort of long-term deal. That would give the Patriots some cap relief while also getting Mankins more guaranteed money.

Logan Mankins Gets Franchise Tag From Patriots As Expected

The New England Patriots were expected to place the franchise tag on offensive lineman Mankins and that’s what they did on Monday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Mankins is the first NFL player to officially receive the franchise tag since teams were allowed to do so on February 10.

Mankins has previously said he wouldn’t be happy with the franchise tag if that’s what the Patriots did.

Franchise Tag Expected For Patriots’ Logan Mankins

We’re not sure if the franchise tag will be valid in the coming weeks and months as the NFL and NFLPA work out a new labor agreement but teams are operating as if it will be. While no player has been tagged 24 hours into the two-week period when the franchise tag is allowed to be utilized, multiple reports are surfacing that various players will receive the tag.

Mankins is one of those players last year that was caught under the six-year restricted free agency umbrella who would have been an unrestricted free agent in other years. That situation let to Mankins sitting out for half the season in protest of the restricted free agent tender.
