The New England Patriots were expected to place the franchise tag on offensive lineman Mankins and that’s what they did on Monday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Mankins is the first NFL player to officially receive the franchise tag since teams were allowed to do so on February 10.
Logan Mankins Gets Franchise Tag From Patriots As Expected
Mankins has previously said he wouldn’t be happy with the franchise tag if that’s what the Patriots did.
"No, I wouldn't be happy about that, if that's what they chose to do, to be dealt that kind of hand."
One ray of hope for Mankins may be the NFLPA’s contention that the franchise tag is meaningless without a new Collective Bargaining Agreement in place. Even if that’s the case, there is expected to some sort of franchise tag concept in the next labor deal between the owners and players.
Mankins is the first player in the league to receive the franchise tag this year. The NFL has told teams they can use the franchise tag between February 10 and February 24 which is the same as in previous years.
The franchise tag number for offensive linemen is expected to be slightly above $10 million.
