Caleb Hanie Won’t Be Returning To Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears are hoping to regroup and rebuild during the offseason in hopes of improving the team in 2012. To that end, it looks like they will soon be parting ways with one of their players.

Jeff Dickerson of ESPN Chicago reports that the team does not plan to bring back Caleb Hanie in 2012 as a backup to starting quarterback Jay Cutler. The Bears will instead pursue other options to add depth to the QB rotation.

Bears head coach Lovie Smith admitted last month the club needs to formulate a better plan at the backup quarterback position heading into the 2012 regular season.

Hanie, an unrestricted free agent, will be free to sign with any NFL team when free agency begins on March 13.

“Each year you learn something,” Smith said last month. “We thought we had a better plan at quarterback. I knew how valuable Jay was to us and that won’t change, but we do need to get ourselves in a better position at that backup quarterback position.

“There are a lot of options out there. This is an attractive place for a quarterback, and we’re going to look at people.”

Although Chicago is unlikely to throw their hat into the ring in pursuit of a superstar like Peyton Manning, they will have plenty of options for a backup quarterback in the free agent market.
