Chad Johnson Pleads No Contest, Reportedly Receives Probation

Chad Johnson was arrested Monday for violation of his probation. A warrant was issued earlier this month after Johnson reportedly failed to report to his probation officer on two occasions and was unable to provide proof of enrollment in a domestic violation education class.

According to the Associated Press, former NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson will serve a year’s probation and attend a counseling course under a plea deal with prosecutors after pleading no contest to a domestic violence charge.

Johnson was charged after former wife and reality TV star Evelyn Lozada said he head-butted her during an argument. She filed for divorce shortly after. The couple had been married since July 4.

The alleged incident took place on Aug. 11, and Johnson was arrested the same day. According to accounts of the event, the couple began arguing when Lozada found a receipt for a box of condoms. Lozada was treated for a laceration on the scene and then transported to a local hospital.

The incident led to Johnson’s release from the Dolphins, which was documented in the current season of HBO’s “Hard Knocks” series. Johnson had a short discussion with Miami head coach Joe Philbin, reminding Philbin that he had never been in trouble before. The coach still said he felt it best for the Dolphins if they parted ways.

“The Dolphins, I let them down,” said Johnson during an occasionally profane montage showing the unemployed wide receiver working out on the beach and at the gym. “I messed up. I got to suffer the consequences. I made that bed I need to lay in it. So basically I got to start all over.”

The couple was married for only 41 days before the two had an altercation on Saturday that allegedly started after Lozada found a receipt for a box of condoms. Johnson was accused of headbutting Lozada and opening up a three-inch gash on the reality star’s forehead.

The two were set to start in a VH1 reality TV show called “Ev & Ocho”, but the series was shelved after Johnson’s arrest.

Johnson issued a statement to his own website, the OchoCinco News Network, apologizing for his misconduct and subsequent arrest.

Johnson will do his best to move forward from this incident as he looks to sign with another NFL team.

While roster cuts are nothing new for Hard Knocks - each summer the program’s narrative thread is built around a team sizing up position battles and trimming their roster before opening day - there’s likely never been one with this amount of star power, and for these circumstances.

Considering Philbin wasn’t a huge fan of Johnson’s antics before his arrest, we expect a less than warm tone for this week’s “dramatic” episode.

Since the arrest, Johnson has lost his job with the Miami Dolphins and their VH1 reality TV show “Ev And Ocho,” has been pulled from the fall lineup. 11 episodes involving the couple’s engagement and wedding were shot. The show was slated to premier on the network on September 3.

Now, he’s also lost his upcoming reality show entitled “Ev & Ocho” that was scheduled to air on VH1. According to the New York Times, the TV station has tabled the 11 episodes it has filmed instead of airing them as scheduled, starting on September 3.

Johnson was taken into police custody over the weekend after allegedly headbutting his wife when she questioned a receipt for condoms that she discovered in his car.

Dansby added that the whole thing is “out of character” for Johnson, who was arrested for domestic violence on Aug. 11. Johnson was reportedly on a one-strike arrangement with the Dolphins, so the organization was not inclined to be patient with this legal issue.
