Rob Scuderi injury: Penguins defensemen leaves game after Frazer McLaren hit

Scuderi did not return for the second period.

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Rob Scuderi left Saturday's game in Toronto after a scary collision with Maple Leafs forward Frazer McLaren.

As Scuderi battled for a loose puck along the boards late in the first period, McLaren skated up and laid a solid hit on the veteran Penguins defender. Scuderi landed awkwardly on his left leg as he fell and had to be helped off the ice.

Here’s video of the play.

Penguins defenseman Deryk Engelland immediately engaged McClaren in a fistfight, and both players were sent off to the dressing room for five minutes. No penalties were assessed for the hit itself.

It didn’t look like McLaren deliberately made contact with Scuderi’s knee. Instead, it’s more likely Scuderi twisted his knee during the fall. There’s been no update on Scuderi’s status, but he didn’t come back out for the second period.
