New York City Marathon results 2013: Priscah Jeptoo wins women’s division
This is Jeptoo’s first win at the New York City marathon. She also won the 2013 London marathon.
It took an excellent comeback in the second half of the race for Jeptoo to capture the win. She was nearly three-and-a-half minutes behind Buzunesh Deba at the halfway point but began to catch up as the race entered Manhattan and overtook Deba with two miles remaining. The win earned her the World Marathon Majors title and the $500,000 bonus that comes with it.
Jeptoo, a 29-year-old Kenyan, won the 2013 London Marathon and finished second at both the 2011 World Championships in Athletics and the 2012 Olympics. She first began competing in top competitions in 2008 and set her personal-best time in a third-place finish at the 2012 London Marathon with a 2:20:14 time.
Deba, an Ethiopian-born resident of New York City, finished second with a time of 2:25:56. The third place finisher, Jelena Prokopcuka, had a time of 2:27:47. Prokopcuka won the race two times in a row in 2005 and 2006. The marathon was cancelled last year due to the destruction of Hurricane Sandy.
