It was a big day for Kenya at the 2013 New York City Marathon, with Geoffrey Mutai winning the men’s title and Priscah Jeptoo taking home the title on the women’s side. It was the third time in history Kenyans have swept the men’s and women’s titles.

Mutai, 32, won the men’s race in 2:08:24, nearly a minute better than the second-place finisher, Tsegaye Kebede of Ethiopia. However, Kebede took home the World Marathon Majors men’s title, which includes five major marathons, the Olympics and world championships.

The first American male to complete the race was Ryan Vail of Portland, who finished in 13th place.

Jeptoo, participating in her first New York City Marathon, finished in 2:25:07, almost a minute better than Ethiopia’s Buzunesh Deba. Jeptoo, 29, overtook Deba just before the 24th mile. With the victory, Jeptoo also earned the World Marathon Majors women’s title.

Adriana Nelson of Fort Collins was the first American woman to finish, matching Vail’s 13th-place finish.

American Tatyana MacFadden won in the women’s wheelchair division, finishing off a sweep of the Boston, London, Chicago and New York City Marathons. Marcel Hug of Switzerland won the men’s wheelchair division.
