Bernard Hopkins won a unanimous 12-round decision over Tavoris Cloud on Saturday. Hopkins becomes the oldest world champion at age 48.

Hopkins was able to work multiple jabs in a row early in the tenth round and Cloud’s pace continued to slow. This allowed Hopkins to continue to dictate the pace and when Hopkins is dictating the pace of a fight, he is at his best.

With Hopkins at 48 years old and Cloud’s stamina somewhat suspect, there was no certainty of what would happen in the late rounds of the fight. But Hopkins managed to still land some slick combinations, getting in with some single shots and some two punch combos while making Cloud chase and miss.

Hopkins has been able to land clean shots and outclass Cloud as the fight wore on. Hopkins again landed the cleaner shots, letting Cloud pin him to the ropes and slipping his punches and landing slick little uppercuts. Cloud landed a big right hand seconds later though as Cloud picked up the pace and started to bring the fight back closer to even after it felt like things were getting away from him.

The referee, however, had decided that the cut came from an accidental headbutt, potentially changing the complexion of the fight completely.
Cloud, knowing that the cut could be a major issue, attempted to come out hard in round seven. Hopkins still got in a few punches of his own in the round as the HBO commentary team said that Cloud’s blood was splattering them at ringside.

After Hopkins had a little success early, he landed a left hook and then Cloud complained that he was also elbowed. Cloud started bleeding over the left eye shortly after, a cut that bled very badly. Hopkins started to land a jab but cloud turned up the heat and landed some decent shots of his own.

And, as Hopkins flurried hard early, Cloud returned fire with some hard punches of his own, actually appearing to stun Hopkins briefly and force him to hold to stop the flurry as opposed to to disrupt Cloud’s timing.
Hopkins then tried to get back to working his game, slipping a big shot from Cloud, taunting, landing his own punch but then getting clipped by a hard shot from Cloud. Now Hopkins lands an uppercut and Cloud drew another warning from the referee for punching after the bell.

Hopkins landed a cracking right hand early in the round after two jabs, and then moments later landed a slick left hand counter. After slipping a Cloud punch, Hopkins smiled and laughed at his foe.

Cloud was able to open up a bit early on but Hopkins did his usual slick job of getting out without taking much damage from it. There is a chance that Hopkins’ slow pace might fail to impress when Cloud is throwing flurries, even if they’re missing. But Hopkins did dig with a hard body shot in the middle of the round. Hopkins worked the jab again and did land a hard right hand over the defense of Cloud.

In the second round, Hopkins attempted to work from the outside and slip Cloud’s punches, and he did a slick job of it for the most part. At one point, Cloud landed a body shot, Hopkins slipped a punch and landed a hard right hand. Cloud went back to the body again and then misses a left hook to the head.
