With San Francisco 49ers starting running back Carlos Hyde sidelined Sunday with a foot injury, veteran Reggie Bush was expected to see a heavy workload. Instead, Bush injured his knee before his first carry of the game, suffering what is believed to be a torn ACL on a punt return in the first quarter of the 49ers’ 27-6 loss to the St. Louis Rams.
Reggie Bush injures knee; 49ers, fantasy owners should move on
The 49ers are running out of running backs. We break down the fantasy implications.

Bush’s backup, Mike Davis, exited the game as well with a hand injury. He had 10 carries before exiting, but gained only four yards. Once Davis was out, the 49ers had only rookie Kendall Gaskins available as a running back. Gaskins had no career carries entering Sunday. He got five carries for six yards Sunday. He also caught two passes for 17 more yards.
Fantasy impact: Bush had already dealt with multiple injuries this season and wasn’t productive when active. In other words, he didn’t really need to be owned in fantasy to begin with, and this injury, which almost certainly signifies the end of his 2015 and could theoretically end his career, just cements that.
Neither Davis nor Gaskins showed much promise in their limited work. With Hyde still on the shelf, and possibly out for more weeks after this one, it seems likely the 49ers will be calling one of the available free-agent running backs soon. Pierre Thomas and Ben Tate have drawn the most interest from teams looking in past weeks. One of them might have a gig soon.
