LeSean McCoy injures shoulder; Bills, fantasy owners wait and see

The Buffalo running back will go for an MRI. We break down the fantasy implications.

Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY Sports

Buffalo Bills running back LeSean McCoy left Sunday’s game with an injured right shoulder. McCoy insisted after the game that the injury wasn’t serious and he could have returned, but he missed the rest of the Bills’ 33-17 win over the Miami Dolphins.

McCoy was having a big game before leaving in the second half. He had 112 rushing yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, catching two passes for seven more yards. The injury actually initially occurred on the team’s first series, but then re-injured it in the second half before leaving the game. Rookie Karlos Williams had been used sparingly in the game before McCoy’s injury, but finished the game as the team’s No. 1. Williams ended Sunday with 110 rushing cards and two touchdowns on nine carries. Overall, the Buffalo running backs combined for 222 yards on 25 carries, good for 8.9 yards per carry.

Fantasy impact: The bad news for Buffalo is that, with a Thursday night game against the New York Jets looming, McCoy has a quick turnaround in which to get healthy. The good news is that the injury doesn’t appear serious, and McCoy did insist after the game that he could have returned if need be.

McCoy will go for an MRI, so we’ll know more about his status sometime Monday. If he can go Thursday, he’ll be a mid-range RB2 against a Jets team that hasn’t been as strong against the run of late. If McCoy can’t go, Williams, who has scored at least one touchdown in all five games he has played, will be a fine RB2 in his own right.
