DeMario Mayfield suspended indefinitely by Charlotte
The Charlotte 49ers are in a five-way tie for second place in the competitive Atlantic 10, but their road to a conference championship just got much tougher. Leading scorer DeMario Mayfield has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of athletic department policy.

The junior guard leads Charlotte in scoring with 11.7 points per game. It will be a huge loss for a 49ers team quietly tied for second in the competitive Atlantic 10 conference.
Charlotte did not say specifically what Mayfield did to warrant the suspension, but coach Alan Major had this to say in the university’s press release:
“We are disappointed in the decisions that DeMario has made which has led to the suspension. We will stay the course and we will rally around each other.”
Though Mayfield earned his degree last December, he is still eligible to play and is in his second season with Charlotte after transferring from Georgia. He had moved into the starting lineup just last week, and has recorded 14 double-figure scoring games this year.
Charlotte will now likely have to lean more on sophomore guard Pierria Henry to pick up some of the slack for his missing backcourt mate. Henry averages 9.0 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists per contest.
The 49ers will get their first chance to adjust to life without Mayfield this Saturday, when they host Massachusetts at 2 p.m.
