Sammy Watkins will not start vs. Wake Forest

Clemson sophomore wide receiver Sammy Watkins will not start against Wake Forest Thursday after being late to a team meeting.

Clemson Tigers wide receiver Sammy Watkins will not start Thursday night against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons after the sophomore was late for a team meeting, according to a report from Greg Wallace of the Anderson Independent-Mail.

According to Wallace, Watkins was three minutes late for the meeting, but the infraction is not deemed serious, and the All-American wide receiver should see some early action against the Demon Deacons.

After a sensational freshman year, Watkins’ sophomore campaign has been a turbulent one. He was suspended for Clemson’s first two games against Auburn and Ball State after an offseason drug arrest. Watkins also missed the Tigers’ game against Boston College on Sept. 29 due to an abdominal virus.

With the added scrutiny opposing defenses have put on Watkins, his statistics have gone down this year. After catching 82 balls for over 1,200 yards and 12 touchdowns last year, Watkins has 24 catches for 202 yards in four games for the Tigers this season.
