BYU blows out Utah State as Keeton hurts knee

    Chris Nicoll-USA TODAY Sports

The Cougars completely dominated once Keeton left the game, putting up 21 unanswered points before the Aggies added on a garbage-time touchdown in the closing minutes. The final outcome was never really in question during the second half.

Box Score Hero: Mitch Mathews had about as good of a game as you can have as a wide receiver, hauling in a team-high five receptions for 112 yards and three touchdowns. Taysom Hill was equally impressive, completing 17-of-31 passes for 278 yards. As a team, BYU carried the ball 50 times for 155 yards.

BYU leads Utah State at halftime

With the score already 10-7 in BYU’s favor midway through the first quarter, both defenses started to settle in a bit. The lone scoring drive of the second quarter was capped off with a 30-yard touchdown strike from Taysom Hill to Mitch Mathews that gave the Cougars their 10-point edge.

The big story of the game is Utah State quarterback Chuckie Keeton going down with what appeared to be a serious knee injury. Keeton’s left knee twisted while he scrambling out of the pocket, and he immediately looked to be in pain as he fell to the turf. He is not expected back in the second half. Aggies players were clearly distraught by the injury to their junior signal caller and they’ll really have to dig deep if they hope to make a comeback in the second half.

Chuckie Keeton leaves game with knee injury

    Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Keeton sat on the bench with his leg iced before being carted to the locker room. CBS Sports Network reported during the game that he will undergo an MRI soon. His return to the game seems highly doubtful at this point.

The junior from Houston twisted his left knee while scrambling out of the pocket and fumbled. He immediately grabbed at his knee after going down and was clearly in pain. Players from both teams gathered around him as trainers attended to him. CBS Sports reported many of Keeton’s teammates were visibly upset on the sidelines.
