Chuckie Keeton injury: Star Utah State QB out of BYU game due to knee

Keeton appeared to twist his knee after scrambling out of the pocket late in the first quarter.

Utah State quarterback Chuckie Keeton left Friday night's game with an apparent knee injury. He was helped off the field by team trainers after remaining down for a couple of minutes.

Keeton sat on the bench with his leg iced before being carted to the locker room. CBS Sports Network reported during the game that he will undergo an MRI soon. His return to the game seems highly doubtful at this point.

The junior from Houston twisted his left knee while scrambling out of the pocket and fumbled. He immediately grabbed at his knee after going down and was clearly in pain. Players from both teams gathered around him as trainers attended to him. CBS Sports reported many of Keeton’s teammates were visibly upset on the sidelines.

Keeton, a junior, has emerged as a darkhorse candidate for the Heisman through the first month of the season. He’s thrown for 1,362 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2013. He’s also rushed for 224 yards, which ranks third on the team, and two touchdowns.

Backup quarterback Craig Harrison has entered the game. Harrison came into Friday having thrown just five passes all season.

The starter later returned to the sideline, out of uniform (via CBSSN):
