FCS Playoffs Scoreboard 2013: South Dakota State, New Hampshire among the 1st round winners

Eight teams had a first-round bye, but the eight first round games are in the books.

Jarius Hollman had both a 90-yard punt return TD and a 34-yard pick-six to lead Furman. Tanner Skogen rushed for 116 yards on 13 carries for the Paladins as well. Furman advances to play North Dakota State in the second round Dec. 7

Alex Ross threw for four touchdowns on 13-for-18 passing, totaling 256 yards. Mike McClure recovered a fumble and brought it back 39 yards into the endzone for the Chanticleers. Coastal Carolina moves on to play Montana on Dec. 7 in the second round.

Sean Goldrich threw for 267 yards and two touchdowns on 15-of-30 passing for the New Hampshire Wildcats. Over half of his completions went to R.J. Harris, who finished with eight catches for 173 yards and a touchdown. The Wildcats move on to play Maine in the second round.

Thanks to the groundwork of Timothy Flanders, Keshawn Hill and Brian Bell, the Bearkats will be moving on in the FCS playoffs after being controversially selected as an at-large team. Flanders, Hill and Bell rushed for a combined 331 yards and five touchdowns on the game, essentially outscoring Southern Utah by themselves. Bell also threw for two more scores and 176 yards through the air, while Southern Utah was unable to really get anything going. Sam Houston State will play Southeastern Louisiana next week.

Nate Nebrich’s 32-of-51, 413 yard, three touchdown performance powered Fordham on Saturday, as the Rams were able to ride to a victory behind the work of their junior quarterback. Keshaudas Spence rushed for 194 yards and two touchdowns for the Sacred Heart Pioneers, but it would prove not enough. His final touchdown with 2:20 to go cut Fordham’s lead to 31-27, but it would prove to be the last score for Sacred Heart all game. Their next possessions would go interception, punt, interception, and turnover on downs, and two field goals from Fordham would account for the final score. Fordham advances to play Towson in the FCS tournament.

It was smooth sailing for the Jacksonville State Gamecocks, who led 38-0 at the half, thanks to a huge rushing day. The Gamecocks combined for 367 yards on the ground and five touchdowns, while limiting Samford to a paltry 93 on 35 carries. Samford had little luck through the air, either, as they went 10-of-27 for 108 yards on the afternoon, although they did have two touchdowns to go with those numbers. Still, it will be the Gamecocks who are moving on to play McNeese State next week.

It was all Zach Zenner, who put the Jackrabbits on his back with 30 carries, 249 yards rushing, and two touchdowns, all of which were key in dispatching Northern Arizona. The Lumberjacks opened the scoring with a Zach Bauman touchdown run, but it was all downhill from there, with Northern Arizona quarterback Kyren Poe throwing three interceptions, part of a four turnover performance by NAU. They would never find the endzone again in a 26-7 win for the Jackrabbits. South Dakota State will play Eastern Washington next week.
