Former five-star quarterback prospect and pending Notre Dame transfer Gunner Kiel visited the Cincinnati Bearcats this weekend, according to Tom Groeschen of the Cincinnati Enquirer:

Kiel is looking for a new school, and a UC source said the Bearcats believe they have a good shot at landing Kiel. Kiel has been visiting in Cincinnati for the past two days.

“He’s looking at several schools,” the source said. “You never know. Throw your name in the hat, see what happens.”

Kiel reportedly attended the Bearcats’ Saturday scrimmage along with approximately 25 prospective 2014 recruits as part of Cincinnati’s Junior Day.

Gunner Kiel was widely considered the top pro-style quarterback prospect in the Class of 2012. His recruitment was chaotic: Kiel initially gave a verbal commitment to Indiana, then rescinded that commitment and promised his signature to LSU. One month before Signing Day, Kiel again changed his mind, decommitting from the Bayou Bengals and eventually signing with Notre Dame.

Kiel spent the 2012 season redshirting, though, and watched as redshirt freshman Everett Golson took control of the starting position. Faced with the prospect of either beating an entrenched starter for the position or backing up Golson for three seasons, Kiel opted for a transfer.

New Cincinnati head coach Tommy Tuberville, himself no stranger to leaving when a situation turns sour, could not comment on Kiel’s visit.
