Gunner Kiel transferring from Notre Dame, according to report

One of the most heralded football quarterback recruits of the 2011-12 recruiting cycle is said to be leaving the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame quarterback Gunner Kiel will allegedly be transferring from South Bend, according to a report from the Irish Sports Daily. Reportedly, Kiel will test his chances to start elsewhere instead of battling Everett Golson for the spot this spring. Kiel still has four years of eligibility left after redshirting the 2012 regular season and will likely sit out a year if he chooses to transfer to another FBS program.

This news has apparently been in the works for a while:

Official details aren’t yet known as to why Kiel would have decided to change schools. No one on the Notre Dame coaching staff nor athletic department has commented.
The nation’s top-ranked quarterback prospect in 2012 had a whirlwind recruitment in the previous cycle. Kiel committed to Indiana, decommitted and pledged to LSU, then reconsidered and chose Notre Dame days before his early enrollment. Kiel was the team’s scout quarterback during the team’s run toward the 2013 BCS National championship game.
