Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin criticized quarterback Johnny Manziel after the reigning Heisman Trophy winner was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct during his team's 52-31 victory Saturday afternoon. Manziel was penalized for trash talking Rice defenders following an Aggie touchdown and did not return to the game.
Kevin Sumlin on Johnny Manziel penalty: ‘That wasn’t very smart’
The Texas A&M head coach was clearly unhappy with his quarterback’s extracurricular activities during a 21-point win over Rice.
Sumlin pulled no punches when talking with reporters after the game:
“That wasn’t very smart. That’s why he didn’t go back in the game either. You would hope at this point, you’d learn something from that. We’re still working on that. He wasn’t going back in the game no matter what was happening.”
Manziel was suspended for the first half of Saturday’s game as a result of a settlement reached with the NCAA following an investigation into offseason autograph sessions. The quarterback immediately began talking with Rice defenders upon entering the game in the second half, but the talk escalated as the Aggies pulled away.
Manziel finished the game completing six of his eight passing attempts for 94 yards and three touchdowns while adding 19 rushing yards on six carries.
