North Carolina State romped to a 40-14 victory over Louisiana Tech in both teams’ season opener, but the victory came at a significant cost. According to CBSSports.com and others, starting quarterback Brandon Mitchell will be out for six weeks after suffering a left foot fracture in the game.
Brandon Mitchell injury: NC State starting QB out for 4-6 weeks
According to reports, Brandon Mitchell will undergo foot surgery and miss up to half of the regular season.

If there’s any consolation for the Wolfpack, it’s that Mitchell was lost in the first quarter and backup QB Pete Thomas was able to spend most of the game leading the team to plenty of scoring in Mitchell’s absence. Mitchell’s the best quarterback on the team, though, and Thomas’ final stats on the day — 15-of-27 for 212 yards and an interception — were rather pedestrian.
A six-week absence would bring Mitchell back just in time to face Florida State in Tallahassee after a bye week. There’s no chance that he’ll be able to lead the team against Clemson on Sept. 19 in a Thursday night home showdown, however, if the surgery reports are true.
