Temple vs. Notre Dame 2013 final score: Fighting Irish jump out early, coast to 28-6 win over Owls

Tommy Rees keys easy Irish victory.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish burst to a 14-point lead on a pair of Tommy Rees touchdown throws and cruised to a 28-6 victory over the Temple Owls in their season opener. Rees, who was named starter after quarterback Everett Golson was suspended, completed 16 of his 24 attempts for 346 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Notre Dame struck quickly, when Rees hit DaVaris Daniels with a 32-yard touchdown pass to complete a three-play, 77-yard drive just 1:26 into the game. After a Temple three-and-out, deja vu struck as Rees connected with Daniels on another 32-yard touchdown pass to complete another three-play drive, this one covering 82 yards.

The score remained 14-0 late into the second quarter, when Temple got on the board through a one-yard touchdown run by running back Kenneth Harper. Notre Dame responded with a 66-yard touchdown pass just 18 seconds later, extending the lead to 21-6.

Halfback George Atkinson III added another rushing score in the third to finish the scoring.

For Temple, quarterback Connor Reilly finished 23/46 for 228 yards. He added 65 yards on 12 carries. Ryan Alderman caught four passes for 65 yards.

No. 14 Notre Dame travels to No. 7 Michigan next week. Temple hosts Houston.
