Central Michigan vs. Michigan Final Score: Wolverines coast to easy win, 59-9

Michigan had no trouble defeating in-state foe Central Michigan, 59-9.

Devin Gardner and Michigan had little difficulty dispatching the Central Michigan Chippewas in afternoon action, 59-9. A blocked punt by highly touted freshman Dymonte Thomas opened up the game's scoring in the first quarter, and Michigan never looked back on the way to an easy, easy victory.

The key for Michigan this week was to win with such ease that the starters would be able to get off the field early, and that's exactly what happened. Michigan showcased several freshmen in the second half, including quarterback Shane Morris; Morris was 4-for-6 for 59 yards, including an 8-yard connection with fellow freshman Jake Butt.

As for Central Michigan, the good news is that this game is over.

Box Score Hero: Gardner’s two interceptions were troubling, but there’s not much else to complain about in a 10-of-15, 162-yard, one-touchdown performance. Even with the two picks, he finished with a 152.72 QB rating, which would have led the Big Ten with ease last year. Gardner added seven rushes for 54 yards and two more scores.

Rankings Ramifications: Beating up on the lowlier competition has always been a wining strategy when it comes to polling, and Michigan may rise a couple slots from its current No. 17 ranking. On the other side, alas, Central Michigan’s top-10 hopes may have taken a hit.

But Did They Cover? Even with a lofty -31.5 line at kickoff, Michigan covered with ease.
