J.W. Walsh named Oklahoma State’s new starting QB, Clint Chelf’s brother angry

The Cowboys finally name a permanent starting quarterback after Saturday’s win.

After an impressive performance in Oklahoma State's win over Mississippi State Saturday, sophomore J.W. Walsh has been named Oklahoma State's starting quarterback.

Walsh, who started Saturday's contest on the bench, entered after two ineffective series by Clint Chelf and never left. He finished with 18 completions on 27 attempts, totaling 135 passing yards. Walsh added 118 rushing yards on 12 carries, plunging over the goal line for one of the Cowboys' three touchdowns.

Walsh and Chelf had been locked in a quarterback derby since early August. Head coach Mike Gundy refused to name a starter until minutes before Saturday’s game, when he opted for the senior Chelf. But Chelf went just 3/6 for 11 yards in two three-play series.

Not everyone was happy with the decision, including Chelf’s brother (via Deadspin):

2 series lol @CoachGundy your a chicken shit.

Chelf’s tweet has since been deleted.

No. 13 Oklahoma State goes back to Texas next week for a game at Texas-San Antonio, before returning to Stillwater for its home opener against Lamar.
