The Jacksonville Jaguars surprised many folks today by releasing incumbent starting quarterback David Garrard and naming Luke McCown the starting quarterback for their opener this Sunday against the Tennessee Titans. The Jaguars drafted Blaine Gabbert as a quarterback of the future but are hoping to buy some time with the younger McCown brother. In case you were wondering, that would mean you probably don't want to be starting David Garrard this weekend, unless of course you're in a keeper or dynasty league looking to tank for Andrew Luck or Landry Jones. In which case, I encourage you to start Garrard all season long.
David Garrard Released: Fantasy Football Impact
The Jacksonville Jaguars released David Garrard Tuesday afternoon. The news affects the rest of the Jaguars starting lineup as you decide who to start and sit this weekend in fantasy football.
Entering this season, David Garrard was at best a possible bye week fill-in or injury replacement QB at best. He put up surprisingly solid numbers last year, but the Jaguars offense remains incredibly questionable in 2011. Although Mike Sims-Walker was not a superstar, it says something when his departure raises further concerns about the offense. At this point, Maurice Jones-Drew and Marcedes Lewis are far and away the two best options from the Jaguars offense. Mike Thomas is worth a late flier, but if you're looking to actually win your league in 2011, MJD and Lewis are about the only guys you should be drafting.
If you’re in a keeper or dynasty league, Blaine Gabbert suddenly got a little more interesting. He was always set to be the QB of the future, but that future is much closer to fruition now that Garrard is gone. Odds are high that Gabbert is in the starting lineup before the end of this season. While he likely will not help anybody in 2011, the early playing time could put him in line to be a decent backup contributor in 2012. Much of it depends on the Jaguars adding more legitimate skill position talent, but this is a start.
