Tiger Woods and his longtime caddie, Steve “Stevie” Williams, are parting ways. “I think it’s time for a change,” Woods wrote on his website.
Steve Williams Says Tiger Woods Fired Him Weeks Before Announcement
The cattiness between Tiger Woods and his former caddy Steve Williams has escalated in recent days. After being officially fired on July 20, then going on national TV and essentially bashing his former employer, Williams revealed to The Golf Channel’s Jason Sobel that Woods fired him weeks before the July 20 announcement.
Adam Scott, Williams’ new loop, won the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational Sunday, which, in case you haven’t heard, was Woods’ first professional tournament in months, and Williams is feeling saucy:

Tiger Woods will reportedly make his return at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational on Aug. 4, at least if all goes according to plan. Woods has been relatively quiet since putting down his clubs in an effort to let his injured knee and Achilles rest, though much has changed since the last time he swung a club competitively. His former caddy and long-time friend Steve Williams is gone, unceremoniously relieved of his duties during Woods’ break from golf. In his place, Woods’ childhood friend Bryon Bell will reportedly hop on the bag, at least in a temporary role.
Woods’ choice of Bell is telling for many reasons, and few of them are good. While it’s true Bell has caddied for Woods before, this has the makings of a public relations disaster. And it’s also a sign of how far withdrawn Woods is at the moment. His inner-circle has shrunk so far, he’s relying on a loyal yes-man to handle his affairs on the course.

Steve Williams plans to write a tell-all book about his life as a caddy once his career is over, and his time with Tiger Woods will most certainly be the most anticipated portion of his story. Williams recently appeared on New Zealand television to discuss his recent dismissal by Tiger Woods and said there will be an “interesting chapter”:
Video of Williams’ appearance on the show can be found here. But until Williams calls it quits, we’ll need to settle for watching him on the links with Adam Scott and to speculate on what exactly he’ll reveal about Tiger Woods.

Steve Williams, Tiger Woods’ longtime caddy, is upset with Woods for dismissing him, and he’s letting the media know it. The New Zealand Herald’s new interview with Williams shows that he’s angry that Woods would let him go after a two-year period in which Woods dealt with an embarrassing scandal, fought through injury, and played sparingly.
Williams claims he hasn’t been in touch with Woods since the dismissal. He also says that he “lost a tremendous amount of respect” for Woods following Woods’ sex scandal (which he claims to have “had no idea” about until after the news broke).

Steve Williams, via a statement released Thursday through his website, said that Tiger Woods’ decision to part ways “came as a shock.”
Woods and Williams were together for 13 of Tiger’s 14 major championships and were considered to be close personally. Williams had even attended Woods’ wedding to Elin Nordegren in 2005. Williams has been caddying for other players during Woods’ recovery from injury, most recently for Adam Scott during the 2011 British open. According to his statement, Williams will now be caddying for Scott permanently.

Since 1999, Steve Williams has served as Tiger Woods’ caddy, joining Woods on the bag for 13 of his 14 major championships and forming one of the best-known pairings of golfer and caddie in the modern era. As of today, that tandem is parting ways: Woods announced Wednesday that Williams would no longer be his caddie in an article posted to TigerWoods.com.
“I want to express my deepest gratitude to Stevie for all his help, but I think it’s time for a change,” Woods said. “Stevie is an outstanding caddie and a friend and has been instrumental in many of my accomplishments. I wish him great success in the future.“Williams, a New Zealander known more familiarly to many golf fans as Stevie, was a vigilant protector of Woods on the course, and acquired a reputation for gruffness with spectators and media for it. In 2004, Williams wrested a camera from a fan at the U.S. Open; at one Skins Game, Williams tossed a photographer’s camera in the water.
