Tiger Woods is struggling to make up ground on moving day at Augusta National. Woods finished his front nine at even-par and remains five shots off the lead.
2013 Masters: Tiger Woods even through 9 holes on Saturday
Tiger Woods’ string of bad luck continued on Saturday, including a birdie putt that managed spin around the cup, but still stay out.
After missing some birdie putts early in the round, Woods moved back to 1-under on the day by sinking a 10-foot birdie on No. 7. A terrific flop shot on No. 8 put him in position for back-to-back birdies, but somehow his three-foot put managed to lip out. The put circled the cup and then some, before settling on the edge. After staring in disbelief, Woods tapped in the par.
The ball hung on the lip so long, it may still be spinning. With this putt combined with Woods hitting the flagstick on Friday, luck has not been on his side so far.
Woods ran into some trouble on No. 9 as his drive went way off to the right. His approach came up short of the green with another excellent chip leaving him a makeable par putt. His missed the putt, however, and tapped in the bogey to finish the first round at even-par.
If Woods is going to make up ground on the back nine, he’s going to have to break a recent trend of struggling on the second nine. Woods has not broken par on the back nine at Augusta in his last eight rounds.
