At the end of spring training, Rangers rotation hopeful Tommy Hunter injured his groin. This did have the happy consequence of Alexi Ogando shifting to a starting role, where he has flourished. But the injury meant the Rangers were without a guy who was an important part of their pitching staff a year ago.
Tommy Hunter Rejoins Rangers; Dave Bush Designated For Assignment
Hunter began rehabbing, but in May he re-injured his groin. This pushed his timetable back several more weeks.
Finally, though, Hunter is now back with the big league club. Jeff Wilson:
Rangers activate Tommy Hunter, designate Dave Bush for assignment.
Interestingly, Hunter will work out of the bullpen, at least for now, as there isn’t an opening in the rotation. In recent relief appearances in the minors, Hunter’s fastball has been clocked in the mid-90s. In all, as a starter and a reliever, Hunter threw 30-2/3 innings during his extended minor-league rehab stint, with four walks and 21 strikeouts. The Rangers will cross their fingers that he can help solidify what’s been a problem relief unit.
As for Dave Bush, I’m sure Dave Bush is a nice man.
