Marc Gasol injury: MRI reveals Grade 2 MCL sprain, Grizzlies center out indefinitely

The reigning Defensive Player of the Year went down in a Memphis loss to San Antonio on Friday.

Marc Gasol is out indefinitely after suffering a Grade 2 MCL sprain on Friday as the Memphis Grizzlies lost to the San Antonio Spurs at home, according to Sam Amick of USA Today. Gasol will not need surgery. He appeared to suffer the injury while attempting to defend the Spurs’ Aron Baynes in the post in the second quarter.

Gasol, 28, hasn’t missed appreciable time due to injury since 2009-10. In his NBA career through last season he played in 377 of 394 possible games, a 96 percent rate.

Memphis is 7-6 on the season, including just 3-3 at home. Gasol, named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2012-13, is averaging 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists per game. His injury may result in a much larger role for Kosta Koufos, acquired from the Jazz in the offseason.
