You’re up, Sixers

We have that and more in Monday’s NBA newsletter.

Joel Embiid.
Joel Embiid.

The Philadelphia Eagles won Super Bowl 52 in thrilling fashion, giving the City of Brotherly Love its first NFL title since before the Super Bowl era. It was Philly’s first major pro sports title since the Phillies won the World Series a decade ago.

You’re up next, Sixers.

This message was relayed to Joel Embiid himself, who attended the game and crashed a live TV interview to scream about the Eagles and declare that he was good luck. Of course, he capped it off with a solid “Trust the Process!”

Noted Philadelphian Kobe Bryant also celebrated the improbable victory, albeit with his family at home. Lonzo Ball and LeBron James, who are not Eagles fans, nonetheless took the opportunity to advocate for justice for rapper Meek Mill, who is serving two to four years in prison on what would appear to be a minor probation violation. (He was cited for reckless endangerment for popping wheelies on his dirt bike, violating a 10-year probation handed down when he was 18.) Karl-Anthony Towns, who is an Eagles fan, wore a “Free Meek Mill” jersey to the Super Bowl.

Al Horford game-winner!

The Cavaliers...did not have a game-winner in their big game against the Rockets on Saturday night. They got smoked. They have no plans to fire Ty Lue, though. Cleveland’s only two games out of the No. 7 seed. Do not ask LeBron about free agency or the Warriors. Here’s Brian Windhorst on the fight at the core of the team.

The Warriors bought Red Panda a new unicycle!

Greg Monroe picked the Celtics over the Pelicans! Part of the reason why: Through some smart cap backflips, Boston could offer him $5 million instead of the minimum.

This was weird.

Rachel Nichols sits down with Paul George to talk about his fit with the Thunder, Russell Westbrook, and Carmelo Anthony, and PG’s upcoming free agency. Just remember that a) George’s final memory with the Thunder is going to be a painful playoff defeat and b) the George and Melo trades were already successes for the Thunder because Westbrook signed an extension.

Steve Kerr admits his short-lived tweet criticizing the officiating of James Harden was intended to be a direct message. The lesson, as always: Never tweet. I will say that I’m a little excited that Kerr seems to be a little worried about the Rockets, at least enough to try to DM someone a clean Harden play complaining about a lack of a call.

DeMar DeRozan’s success is in not giving a [bleep].

ESPN showed a celebrity bowling tournament before the Super Bowl, starring noted bowlers Chris Paul and James Harden. It was actually good.

The Bucks just got Jabari Parker back. Now Malcolm Brogdon is out a while with a torn quad.

Good piece by Zach Harper on “Maple Curry’s” hot run.

Whitney Medworth’s B-Sides appreciate Russell Westbrook’s very expensive game-day robe and more.

Have all the big NBA trades already happened? The deadline is Thursday.

We actually have a Rookie of the Year race.

Be excellent to each other.
