There was only one guy who wasn’t a kicker among the names that fans could choose for their inaugural special teams choice to our SB Nation College Football Hall of Fame. And kickers never get credit for anything -- so Tim Dwight naturally ended up winning the poll.
Iowa’s Tim Dwight Inducted Into SB Nation College Football Hall Of Fame
Iowa’s Tim Dwight beat out a bunch of kickers to make the SB Nation Hall of Fame.
Our Iowa blog, Black Heart Gold Pants, told us this about Dwight in an email.
He set Big Ten career records for punt return yardage (1102) and touchdowns (5), which stood for several years. But stats and records only tell part of the story with Dwight -- they don’t come close to capturing the feeling of watching Dwight on the football field. The term “game-changer” gets thrown around a lot, but rarely has it ever been more apt than when used to describe Dwight -- his returns were can’t miss affairs, every one a chance for him to electrify a stadium full of people... something he did with considerable regularity. Dwight was incredibly fast and able to cut on a dime and leave defenders clutching air. He remains one of the most exciting players in Iowa history and one who forced fans to reconsider what was possible from a return man.
Dwight won 81 percent of the vote, coasting past the kickers like he used to coast past defenders. He joins Michigan’s Desmond Howard, another guy who knows a thing or two about returning kicks, in the Hall.
The SB Nation College Football Hall of Fame is a summer project involving all of the network’s excellent college football blogs. Each community could nominate five of its own for inclusion, with 10 of those nominees being inducted by our selection committee, which included reps from most FBS conferences. The remaining 10 were chosen by public vote.
