After Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers sustained a concussion during last Sunday’s game against the Lions, the team was unsure of whether he’d be able to start this coming Sunday against the Patriots. On Saturday, the team confirmed that Rodgers is officially listed as “out” and will not play. From the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel’s Tom Silverstein:
Aaron Rodgers Ruled Out For Packers-Patriots Game; Matt Flynn Will Start At QB
Team doctors did not clear him to play. No details were given about the progress Rodgers made during the week or how close he was to playing, but unless he was completely clear of symptoms and cleared by an independent neurologist, he would not be allowed to play.
As Chris Mortenson noted, it’s been a very, very long time since the Packers have had to start a backup quarterback:
RT @C_Fein: @mortreport when was the last time the packers started a backup QB? >> Brett Favre, week 4, 1992
Matt Flynn is expected to start behind center for the Packers. Last season, Flynn completed 16 of 29 passes for 182 yards. He has some big shoes to fill, and on an important week: the 11-2 Patriots are perhaps the best team in the league at this juncture. The 8-5 Packers’ chances of reaching the playoffs will take a huge swing this week, whether they win or lose.
