Rams Could Clean House After Disappointing 2011 Season

St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke could clean house and fire general manager Billy Devaney and head coach Steve Spagnuolo after the 2011 season.

St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke is poised to clean house and fire general manager Billy Devaney and head coach Steve Spagnuolo, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Acee's report on the Rams' plans is tucked into an item about a similar housecleaning that could take place with the San Diego Chargers, where team president Dean Spanos is expected to fire head coach Norv Turner and possibly general manager A.J. Smith after missing out on the playoffs for a second consecutive season.

If both dominoes fall in San Diego, Kroenke would target Smith to take over the Rams football operations.

“People familiar with Rams owner Stan Kroenke’s plans said Monday that Kroenke is waiting for Spanos to make a move on Smith,” writes Acee. “If Smith is available, league and agent sources strongly indicated that Smith will be hired as Rams’ general manager and bring along Jon Gruden as head coach.”

After owning 40 percent of the Rams since 1995, Kroenke exercised his option to purchase the remaining portion of the franchise after the 2009 season. The Rams went 7-9 and nearly won the NFC West in 2010, but have won just two games in 2011 and will finish in last place for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
