Nnamdi Asomugha Could Be Considered By Cowboys, Eagles, Jets, Others

Oakland Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha had a clause in his contract that will allow him to become a free agent whenever the NFL lockout is lifted. Assuming free agency comes at some point, there could be a number of teams interested in him.

First, it’s important to note that every team in the league would like to have Asomugha. He’s arguably the best cornerback in football so it’s not as if teams won’t want him.

Second, it’s also important to note that not many teams will make a serious run at him because he will become (or remain) one of the highest paid players in the game.

So with that out of the way, who will be interested in Nnamdi Asomugha?

Peter King of SI.com lists a number of teams that could have interest: Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Detroit Lions and New York Jets.

All these teams are known to have deep pockets -- and to spend the money in there -- with the exception of the Lions. As King notes, they're close to being a playoff contender so, in some ways, they'd make sense. The Jets are already paying CB Darrelle Revis so they probably wouldn't want to have so much cash tied up in their secondary unless there is no salary cap.

If I had to guess now, I think I would predict the Texans as the team that makes the most sense for him. They need their defense re-tooled in a bad way, which Asomugha would help with. In addition, they need to topple the QB Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC South, which Asomugha would help with.
