It's not an offseason unless the Oakland Raiders fire their head coach and that's what's going down on Tuesday as ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that the Raiders have fired head coach Hue Jackson. This comes a week after they hired a new general manager, Reggie McKenzie.
Hue Jackson’s Firing By Raiders Shouldn’t Be Major Surprise
At first glance, the move comes as a surprise because most firings take place within days of the regular season ending -- not a week and a half later. Until last week, we thought Jackson was safe but once McKenzie was hired there was concern by some that Jackson could get the ax.
It took a week but Jackson did end up getting fired and to figure out why this happened shouldn't be too difficult. We look back to Jackson's postgame press conference after they lost to the Chargers on the final day of the regular season, and missed out on the playoffs. Jackson was asked what he's going to do to fix the Raiders and he indicated he planned to take more control of the team.
Let me tell you something, I’m going to take a stronger hand in this whole team this whole organization. There ain’t no way that I’m going to feel like I feel today a year from now. I promise you that. I ain’t feeling like this no more. This is a joke. To have a chance at home to beat a football team that is reeling after being beaten in Detroit, who’s one of your rivals and they come in here and beat us like that. I’m going to take a hand in everything.
The problem? Jackson wanted control but McKenzie was the man hired to run the organization. It’s easy to see where there could be conflict with a personality like Jackson’s.
General managers often want to hire their own head coaches so the more you look into this move, the more we realize we should have seen it coming.
